A short video chronicle of THE MOMENT—new photographs and paintings by Nancy Knowles, November 2012-February 2013 at Pisticci NYC. Soundtrack: Knowles sings CREDO, by Frank Wallace (Wallace accompanying on guitar).
While hurricane Sandy slammed into New York and New Jersey, I was finishing up paintings for my art exhibit in Manhattan. I created all new work, conceived for the space. The short video chronicles my summer of working on the show, through its launch. The postponement of the opening because of the storm allowed me to paint one last piece, called ¡SANDY!. I painted through the storm, in our greenhouse, with trees falling in the woods, and rain lashing at the glass windows overhead and all around. CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE…
¡SANDY! 2012
40″x 51″ triptych, mixed media on canvas
Since the show was site-specific, I had one huge wall to fill, and many other smaller locations, mostly on brick. I wanted that big wall to be like a stage set—a simple backdrop for the good food and good times that would be had in front of it. So I conceived this diptych with a double purpose in mind—as a context for all that goes on at Pisticci, and as a stage set for my play, LUNA:
PLUS ÇA CHANGE* 2012
4′ x 10′ diptych, mixed media on canvas
*plus ça change: (literally) The more it changes, the more it’s the same thing (sometimes loosely translated as the more things change, the more they stay the same)… Although the outward appearance may change, fundamentals are constant. (from Wiktionary)
